WISHES: Be Careful What You Wish For

In August, I wrote about the feeling of needing a change in my life—whether through a new home, a new job, or a new project. By September, I found myself embarking on all three! Well, almost. I’m currently seeking a new job, and the hiring journey has been daunting, to say the least.

Finding a job has become my full-time job: researching, reviewing, applying, cutting, pasting, and waiting for that one email or phone call that says, “We’d like to interview you.” When those moments happen, there’s a split second of wanting to shout from the rooftops, followed by a deep breath to stay calm and professional.

While the process has its challenges, the true blessing has been the people I’ve met along the way—Search Firm Recruiters, HR managers, and CEOs. Many have gone above and beyond, offering guidance, revising my resume, providing interview coaching, and sharing job opportunities. These individuals are my heroes, replacing my worries and fears with encouragement and hope.

I’ve also embraced new tools like ChatGPT to help refine my communication. I’ve learned the nuances of LinkedIn’s #OpenToWork and recruiter only settings. I have appreciated every job board and recruiter who sends posts with messages like, “Your skills are perfect for this role.” Even if those messages are AI-generated, they remind me that I matter.

Another exciting development is a new project with my daughter, Dana: Crazy Kitty Consignment. Inspired by her love for cats (she has four!), we’ve created an online consignment shop. The name reflects our mission: offering unique items, affordable finds, and a seamless resale experience. Check out our pop-up event on Facebook here!

As for my third wish—a new house—we’ll see what the future holds. In 45 years of marriage, we’ve lived in 17 different homes. While we’re currently in our second “forever home,” life’s only constant is change, especially in today’s job market.

Wishing for change is one thing, but living through it is another. It’s not for the faint of heart. Change often brings uncertainty and anxiety, but it also brings growth. As Steven Covey wisely said, “Trust the process.”

I’ve found solace in daily prayer, asking God to direct my steps, calm my heart, and grant me patience. Psalm 27:14 reassures me to: "Wait on the LORD; Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart."

Wishes reflect the desires of our hearts. They hold the promise of what could be, though they may not always align with our current reality. The key is to be prepared for the change they bring, whether it’s expected or surprising.

One change I’m excited about is recommitting to my small business, What She Said, LLC. What began as a platform to share my doctoral journey has grown into a mission-driven venture to support emerging leaders. Thanks to the inspiration from a recent interview, I’ve crafted a mission statement:
