UGLY. LEADERSHIP. Ever experienced this in your workplace? That one boss that is hard to work with? Or work for? That doesn't inspire? Promote? Encourage? Or is just plain mean?

I'm sure we all have had that experience. In fact, you are probably visualizing that person right now! Leadership doesn't have to be divided into the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Mahatma Gandhi stated,

"A sign of a good leader is not how many followers you have, but how many leaders you create."

Good leadership is wanting others to succeed.

Bad leadership is not encouraging others to succeed.

Ugly leadership is not caring if others succeed.

Dan Rockwell, of Leadership Freak, posted seven things that make leaders ugly:

1) Anger

2) Arrogance.

3) Neediness

4) Negativity

5) Pettiness (offensive & resentment)

6) Selfishness

7) Distrust

He also posted seven things to do that make you beautiful:

1) Set higher expectations for yourself than for others.

2) Enjoy your talent (humbly).

3) Commit to contribute.

4) Give second chances.

5) Let go of disappointment and notice beauty.

6) Practice forgiveness.

7) Create interactions that demonstrate the value of others.

The good, bad, and ugly in leadership is a powerful influencer. It was the reason I completed a doctorate degree last year in ethical leadership. What started as a educational journey has became a passion because I believe, like Vince Lombardi, that "leaders are made and not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.”

So think about your ugly sweater (leadership style) this Christmas season. Are you the good, the bad, or the ugly leader? A great way to change is to examine your leadership skills, assess your leadership style, and gain knowledge on leadership development. I can help there.
