SUNSET.

I chase sunsets.

Last week I had the privilege of spending a week in Florida with my sister. Getting out of Wisconsin winter is good for the psyche (soul, mind and body). One of the things I enjoy the most is chasing the sunsets either at the ocean, on land, or out my window.

Knowing this about me, my sister made a point of pulling off of the skyway, between Tampa and Sarasota, just so I could take a series of photos of the sun setting. This one is the last before completely disappearing beyond the horizon and my favorite!

While I enjoy the splendor of the colors and the awe of this daily phenomenon, I always have this nagging thought in the back of my mind, "what did I do today that was productive?"

I can't seem to get away from duty or responsibility both internal or external. It's always on my mind as to what I should be doing or what I should have done that day. I ponder as to...

Whether I did it right or wrong?

How could I have done it differently?

Should I have done it differently?

Am I second guessing myself?

I take responsibility very seriously as I was taught, trained, and nurtured that way. Both born and made.

Leadership is about responsibility. It is a leadership trait. In his book, Introduction to Leadership: Concepts and Practices, Northouse (2018) wrote on Theory Y and in Assumption #3 he believes that people are inherently resourceful, and if given the chance, people have the capacity to engage in a wide range of goal-setting and creative problem solving activities. "In the proper environment, the average person learns to accept and see responsibility (p. 81).

Richie Norton once stated, "Every sunset is an opportunity to reset." I look at it as a reflection as to what the day was like and how tomorrow can be different.

Do you need to reset each day? Do you need to look at every sunset as a prelude to a new dawn? Remember you can't change the events of today, but you can learn from them.

Its inevitable that tomorrow will provide new responsibilities and new leadership opportunities. Will you let the sun set on them knowing you did your best not for yourself, but for others? For the situations you faced? For the difficulties you overcame? For the conflicts resolved or yet to resolve?

Ralph Waldo Emerson stated, "Every sunset brings the promise of a new dawn."

Why not enjoy both?
