How do you measure success? Do you measure it according to your failures or your accomplishments?

Mickey Rooney once stated, "You always pass failure of your way to success."

While famous as a movie star from a young age with film, television and stage success, Mickey also knew failures. Starting in vaudeville with his parents as a toddler, he was one of the original silent film stars. He starred opposite Judy Garland (Dorothy from Wizard of Oz...for my young friends) numerous times, Elizabeth Taylor (National Velvet), and Audrey Hepburn (Breakfast at Tiffany's) to name a few.

His failures included eight marriages, elder abuse, and being broke. I'm sure it was during one of these times that he understood "you always pass failure on your way to success." (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001682/bio)

What do you consider successful?

Recently, my husband and I remodeled our kitchen. It was as simple (and tiring) as painting and installing new pipe shelving to display my colorful pottery. We had a few failures along the way, some do overs, some caulking, spackling and re-painting to cover mistakes. While that was sheer frustration at the time, when it was all done and I could stand back and look at the awesomeness of a finished project. A more modern look with a wider scope of room due to a few changes, tweaks, and planned decisions. #weekendwarriors

In leadership, how do we measure success? Is it with the attitude of wanting to be a successful leader?

Forbes is one of my favorite websites when it comes to leadership development. In an article by Deep Patel, he writes about 11 Powerful Traits of Successful Leaders. They are:

  1. Self-Managing

  2. Acting Strategically

  3. Being an Effective Communicator

  4. Being Accountable and Responsible

  5. Setting Clear Goals and Achieving Them

  6. Having a Vision for the Future

  7. Managing Complexity

  8. Fostering Creativity and Innovation

  9. Team Building and Promoting Teamwork

  10. Creating Lasting Relationships

  11. Learning Agility

I would encourage you to read the full article for a comprehensive understanding of each trait: https://www.forbes.com/sites/deeppatel/2017/03/22/11-powerful-traits-of-successful-leaders/?sh=37f4c724469f

Being a successful leader is as important as enjoying your successes. Whether it is working with people or working on a project. There is a complete satisfaction in a job well done even though you experienced some failures along the way.

See it through...don't give up!

I believe your feelings of success will far outweigh that feeling of failure. Besides its not a failure if you learn from it!
