LENSES. Do you ever reflect on yourself based on others? What do you see? Is it a true reflection of who you are or is it hidden by the sight of others?
Recently, I have been doing this, hiding because of others. Not blogging because I thought no one was listening. I was getting lazy with the commitment I made myself to create and reflect thoughts, images, and leadership truths. Hence, the purpose of blogging on my website. Not for glory, fame, or recognition, but for education, knowledge, and personal reflection.
As I travel, I like to capture unique photos. This picture was taken at Outrigger Resort in Ft. Myers Beach off our balcony. The storm had run us off the beach, so in the safety of our hotel room, I photographed the beach. I realized that every time I took off my polarized sunglasses the truth of the picture was hidden. It was when I held up my sunglasses and shot the photo of the beach through my lens that it truly reflected what was being seen. It was a pure and beautiful sunset. Made by the very hand of God, a true reflection of His creation that we enjoy and delight in every night if we choose to do so.
Lenses are plural for a lens. By definition, it is a piece of glass or other transparent substance with curved sides for concentrating or dispersing light rays, used singly (as in a magnifying glass) or with different lenses (as in a telescope). Lenses are for visual acuities or seeing something more clearly.
In an article entitled, Seven Tips for Designing a Leadership Self-Reflection Practice, Dr. Palena Neale outlines seven simple steps for the discovery of one's leadership practices.
(Re) Commit to continuous learning.
Set an intention to reflect consistently.
Start with one prompt or theme and see where it goes.
Permit yourself to narrate your experiences.
Be honest.
Switch things up.
Think of self-reflection as part of your self-care.
As always, I encourage you to read the full article for the best impact and understanding. I believe you will find confirmation in your own beliefs through the input of others in your life. We learn from each other, right?!
So following my advice, I am considering (#6) switching things up. Instead of weekly blogs, I am recommitting (#1) myself to writing every month starting September 2022. I will continue to reflect (#2) on experiences, address leadership themes (#3), share photos (#4), be transparent (#5), and continue in this journey as part of my self-care (#7).
There, I think I have covered all the steps so help me be accountable by reading every monthly blog and commenting on your experiences. Let's make this interactive as we grow together specifically in leadership development and generally in life.
Remember to reflect on who you are through your lenses. You will find beautiful images to share with others.
