INSPIRATION.

What inspires you?

Where do you find inspiration from?

When is inspiration appropriate to share?

Recently I have been finding inspiration from two sources - Work & Canva.

I'm sure you were expecting something more ethereal or extremely delicate and light in a way that seems to perfect for this world. Something like the wings of a butterfly or the light that comes through glass that creates a rainbow prism on the wall. Maybe the sun as it rises over the horizon or sets behind the same.

For me, working with people brings inspiration. When those "aha moments" happen and you get to see their reaction is priceless. Watching them help others, especially strangers or children, particularly moves me to tears. I always wonder if they will ever understand how much their actions are affecting others. I'm sure they don't respond because of extrinsic rewards, but what they value most - intrinsic peace.

Canva provides inspirational quotes in all forms of media and it's easy to manipulate to match your messaging. Lately, I've been inspired by this tool to create my own messaging. I created my first video and posted it here just to see if I could. Voila, I was able to!

When I read the words though it caused me to pause as to what the message was trying to convey. What did the unknown author mean when he/she stated,

Don't Stop When You Are Tired. Stop When You Are Done.

I like to believe it means, in a leadership context, that we are to go beyond the physical to get to the mental completion. I don't know about you, but my body gives out way before my mind does. I find myself pushing it to get tasks completed. It's about not giving up and moving forward until completion. It's harder when it's an individual response and not a group effort. I rely greatly on my group or team at work. I hope you do the same in a leadership capacity.

So when I consider the meaning of the quote, I think of the leadership characteristic Fortitude. Psychology Today calls this a cardinal virtue in leadership. It states,

Fortitude . The best leaders are courageous and persistent. They have a desire to succeed, but it is prudence and temperance that helps them to understand the paths to success and to not allow their emotions and passions to get the better of them.

Fortitude along with temperance, prudence, and justice is the four qualities that leaders need for success, according to Dr. Ronald E. Riggio. I recommend reading his article (listed above) as it tells you how to develop these leadership virtues.

Today, I want you to ask yourself, Do I stop when I'm done or do I stop when the task is done?

First, stop for 7-seconds and soak in the video above. Then consider when is completion? Is it mental or physical for you? Then, think about what inspires you to press forward.

Consider fortitude as a leadership virtue especially in those tough situations as your greatest courage comes through pain and adversity (Webster.com)

Nothing is more inspiring than working through adversity and being able to tell your success story. Let that be your inspiration.
