HONOR. Definition: 1. High respect, great esteem. 2. Adherence to what is right or to a conventional standard of conduct.
Today, we honor those who served in our armed forces - Veterans. Men and women who trained, served, and even died for our freedom. Someone once asked how to remember veterans. The University of Alabama suggested saying,
Thank you for your service to this country. Your bravery, sacrifice, and strength do not go unnoticed, and we will always be indebted to you and your family for all that you have given to the country. I would like to thank you very much for your service! Thank you for your time, bravery, and sacrifice for this country.
My suggestion is if you can't remember all of that just say "thank you for your service".
Nothing honors people more than being recognized and acknowledged. "Appreciation has the amazing habit of bringing more reasons to be grateful for" (Isabella Koldras). As we recognize and acknowledge others we remind ourselves of the value of not only the actions of the person but the meaning of the person in our lives. Whether a family member, co-worker, volunteer, donor, or acquaintance there is value in each life lived and it is our responsibility to honor them as such.
“We live in a society where the word honor is normally associated with military service; however leading with honor is an important concept for all leaders. “ - Dr. Kim Moore
Dr. Moore shares seven attributes that will help us earn the honor as leaders:
Reject passivity – leaders are problem solvers and prone to action
Accept responsibility – leaders can delegate authority but never the responsibility
Keep your promises – your word is your bond
Give honor and be honorable – live by a set of values that model integrity
Serve and work under authority – if we want to lead others, we must be willing to follow
Be committed and courageous – do the right thing even when it is hard and no one is looking
Possess an attitude of honor – our attitude determines how we treat others
So for this Veterans Day, honor those who brought honor to our country with their service. In my immediate family, it's my three brothers, sister, and father-in-law.
Also, honor yourself. Possess attributes that will make you an honorable leader. Be cognizant of soft skills learned and unlearned in order to be the honorable leader that people want to follow.
