Ever take a break just because you didn't feel what you were doing was effective?
Did it take too much time?
You were burned out?
All of the above?
I've been on hiatus since May when it comes to blogging. I started a few years ago to have a space to share thoughts, information, and research after completing my doctorate. I had read many books, researched peer-reviewed journals, listened to many lectures, and wanted to formulate thoughts on leadership development while imparting wisdom to others.
I got very excited about the prospect of teaching, so I formed a small LLC called “What She Said” to have a legitimate business and platform. The name is inspired by Michelle Obama's belief that she was not a bossy child but a child who could be the boss—one with a voice and wanted to use it.
My brothers called me Bossy Bev when growing up, but it’s because I had to be. I was in charge of four active, mean, rambunctious boys who were in trouble all the time, both at home and school. If they got in trouble at school, they were punished at home as well. They were notorious for fighting. At a time when boys didn’t hit girls, I became the buffer between them and others. My bossiness kept them out of trouble and saved them from punishment [you’re welcome].
They made me a natural-born leader whether I wanted to be or not.
According to the Great Man Theory, great leaders are born, not made. Leadership traits are inherent and cannot be learned. Great leaders come forward when needed to become the foundation upon which history is built (Thomas Carlyle).
I don’t necessarily believe this theory, as I’m a proponent of leaders being made through education, values, beliefs, and tenacity.
What She Said is a culmination of the past, present, and where I want to go. I want to teach. I want to learn. I want to impart. I want to reflect. I want to engage. I want to be heard.
Leadership development is a passion of mine. Leadership skills are a necessity. Together, they create a well-rounded, effective leader in leading and managing teams.
So, let’s continue this journey together. If I commit to bi-monthly blogs, would you commit to reading them? If I research and share, will you comment if you agree or disagree? Can we have a conversation in the comments?
Let’s help each other grow in knowledge and leadership.
