COMFORT.

COMFORT. Where do you find yours? Is it that first cup of coffee every morning? A shoulder to cry on? A good book to read? Your favorite sappy movie? Or that last drink at night?

I find comfort in others. In friendships and family. In work relationships and interactions with strangers. As an extrovert, people are my synergy, but also my demise. Someone once said to me, "are you always up even at home?" Before I could answer my husband responded with, "no she crashes" and he is right.

Work is my performance space and home is my safe place. It is where my professional self takes a rest. It's where I find comfort from a long work week, sleepless nights, conflict resolution, strategic planning, and budgets. Are you there with me yet?

Executive Coach, Lolly Daskal, states "The life of a modern leader brings challenges of leading, innovating, motivating, growing, developing, evaluating, communicating, and risking. And here’s a fact: You can’t do any of those things very well within your comfort zone. The end of your comfort zone is where your leadership begins."

While comfort is where we find solace it's not where we will become better leaders. It's within the conflict that we grow, learn, stretch, and find our voice. It's where we make decisions to be good, bad, or ugly leaders. It's at the end of conflict where leadership begins.

Daskall lists 8 steps to better leadership:

  1. Be smart and challenge yourself.

  2. Be fearless and challenge the vision.

  3. Be daring and challenge the organization.

  4. Be heroic and challenge the stakeholders.

  5. Be innovative and challenge best practices.

  6. Be strong and challenge the culture.

  7. Be bold and challenge the talent.

  8. Lead from within.

I challenge you to read the rest of Daskall's article to find the meaning behind each step. While some of these might not bring you comfort, they will certainly influence your growth.

Shankar stated, "Conflict is the nature of the world. Comfort is the nature of the self. Amidst the conflict seek comfort."

So lit up that fire pit this summer and cook a smores. Listen to the sounds of crickets and frogs at night. Watch the sunset until it hits the horizon or breathe in the sunrise in the morning. Drink your coffee slowly and meditate on the possibilities of the day. Pray for yourself and others. Find comfort in the little things so you will be equipped to handle the big things.

As the movie title states, Eat, Pray, Love but I would encourage you to #pray #challenge #grow
