2023. The only time of the year when a number marks a milestone seems to be on New Year's Eve when we get ready to reflect on the old year and look forward to the new year. A milestone is the marking of time when something important happens like graduation, engagement, marriage, or the birth of a child. These are records or remembrances in our personal lives that tell our stories.

I would like to believe there are milestones in our professional lives, such as education, certification, advancement, or the mastering of a skill that tells our stories as well. A professional milestone is furthering ourselves so that we are better than what we were but not as complete as we could be.

This year, did you look at your job as a milestone or a stepping stone? I celebrated 31 years with the same organization so I would consider that a milestone or something more permanent. If I started a new job, I would have considered that a stepping stone or something less permanent but not necessarily temporary.

“Where there is a stepping stone, there is a milestone”

P.S. Jagadeesh Kumar

This quote makes me wonder if both a stepping stone and a milestone can happen in tandem with each other. Can temporary become permanent? Can permanent become temporary?

If you look at it that way, then yes to the former and no to the latter. Either way, does 2022 reflect what you wanted to accomplish? If not, how are you going to change that in 2023?

For me, the 2022 milestones were:

  • Completing three years in a job that someone told me "I was created for."

  • Learning to turn my phone off for a day and spend time with myself.

  • Reading books again after years of reading research papers for my dissertation.

  • Reminding myself why I blog and what purpose it serves.

For 2023, my motives are:

  • Finding a new path for professional education

  • Mastering a new skill - not sure what yet

  • Adventuring to new places with family

So Happy New Year! What you may call New Year's resolutions, I chose to call motivations.
